Sedation Dentistry

Is anxiety or dental phobia preventing you from getting the care you need?

Adel Dental Associates provides sedation dentistry to help individuals just like you relax every step of the way.

Learn how Dr. Michael McCartney uses oral and IV sedation options to ensure patient comfort in Adel, GA.

A Closer Look at Sedation Dentistry

Dr. McCartney has been practicing sedation dentistry for over two decades. He offers this service at our Adel, GA, office so you can relax while you undergo dental procedures that are critical to your ongoing oral and overall physical health.

Lots of people have dental anxieties, fears, and phobias about going to the dentist. This can prevent them from getting routine care and lead to more complex problems that require more extensive dental work. With sedation dentistry, we can ensure dental patients receive critical care while helping them remain relaxed and comfortable.

Forms of Sedation Dentistry
Our Practice Offers

Oral Sedation

Your dentist will prescribe a sedative — typically in pill form — that you take before your appointment so the medication has time to take effect. This medication will put you in a dreamlike state for your procedure, although you will be awake and able to communicate with your dentist.

IV Sedation

IV sedation dentistry is the deepest form of conscious sedation available. With this option, sedative medication runs through an IV into your bloodstream. Your dentist will closely monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels to ensure your safety throughout treatment.

What Procedures Benefit From Sedation?

The specific procedures that most benefit from sedation will depend on the specifics of your treatment and your level of dental fear and anxiety. Routine dentistry procedures such as cleanings and fillings do not typically necessitate sedation. If you have severe anxiety, however, Dr. McCartney may suggest sedation so you can relax during general, cosmetic, or restorative treatment.

More extensive procedures, such as dental implant surgery and gum grafting, are often paired with some degree of sedation regardless of your anxiety levels. Dr. McCartney can adjust the level of sedation to meet your
individual needs.

Paying for Sedation Dentistry What You Should Know

While the answer largely depends on your specific plan, the fact remains that most dental insurance companies and standard plans do not cover sedation dentistry expenses. However, our dentistry team believes that this expense shouldn’t keep you from pursuing the treatment you need. That’s why our dental practice provides alternative ways to budget.

Adel Dental Associates accepts financing through CareCredit® and offer in-house insurance (as part of our Smile Savers membership club) to help patients afford treatment. To learn more about how we work closely with individuals just like you when it comes to paying for their general, cosmetic, or restorative dental treatment, get in touch with us today.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Type of Dentistry

Does sedation make me unconscious?

No, our sedation options are not intended to make you unconscious. IV sedation, however, can induce a dreamlike “twilight state” and many patients will have little to no memory of their dental treatment.

Will I feel pain while under sedation?

No. Some procedures may mean you feel a gentle sense of pressure or other sensation, but treatment will be virtually pain-free. Our dentist uses anesthetics and pain medication in conjunction with sedation dentistry to thoroughly numb the area being treated.

What is the difference between sedation and general anesthesia?

The difference between sedation and general anesthesia boils down to levels of consciousness. Sedated patients can respond to the dentist during the procedure, but after a twilight state, won’t remember it. With general anesthesia, the patient is unconscious throughout the treatment.

Can I drive home after sedation dentistry?

No, we advise you not to drive yourself home after oral sedation or IV sedation. The effects of these methods can take a bit to wear off; we recommend you arrange for a close friend or family member to transport you home after
your dental visit.
